Tawny Newsome on Lower Decks season 2: “We know this is great Star Trek...Zero Fs given.”
AUGUST 8, 2021 - With the season premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks just days away, actors Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid sat down for a group interview to talk about Season Two, as reported by TrekMovie.com. Over the course of the conversation they touched on everything from character development to favorite cameos, as well as Star Trek in-jokes and even Starfleet commemorative plates. They also discussed the confidence that helps them build on a successful first season for this irreverent yet affectionate take on the Star Trek universe.
“This year [Lower Decks is] so sure of itself,” Newsome said. “We’re like, ‘Yes, we know this is funny. We know this is great Star Trek.’ And there’s zero apologies for it. Zero Fs given.”
Quaid echoed his co-star’s sentiments, and added, “It’s not that we weren’t confident last season […] but this season we got all the setup out of the way. […] You know these characters and we just take you to insane places. I can’t wait for you guys to check it out.”
Season one of Lower Decks ended with big character changes for both Newsome’s character Beckett Mariner and Quaid’s character Bradward Boimler, and the actors talked about how those changes impact season two. Quaid said, “I always thought of the two of them as best friends who just won’t admit that they’re best friends. And I think we see a bit more of that this season. I’m really excited to show you guys the turns in that relationship.”
