Terry Matalas teases some new details about Star Trek: Picard season 3
AUGUST 19, 2022 - Star Trek: Picard season 3, will be the finale they never got.
Showrunner Terry Matalas, in an interview with TrekMovie, discussed his long history with Trek, from being a fan to working on Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. He shared that it took a lot of convincing with the ‘powers that be’ to make big and drastic changes for the final season of the series, by bringing back the beloved characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He revealed that he’s been a major fan of the motion pictures and that Star Terek: Nemesis wasn’t the proper send off to our beloved crew.
”I had always felt like the Next Generation characters never got their due finale. Nemesis didn’t feel like the end. I was always hoping they were going to get their own Undiscovered Country where we got to see them in a high-stakes adventure. Each one of those characters plays a major part and ties up arcs that go back 30 years.”
He further revealed that season 3 will be that adventure, and promises that it’s not just a two hour movie spread out over ten episodes, though he does admit that the last two episodes “are a movie.”
He also shared that while season 3 will continue with the serialized format that the first two seasons have utilized, the episodes will still have their own identity. The structure will allow for in-depth character stories for the TNG shipmates. This will allow for more character growth than the four TNG movies combined.
He then shared that “It starts with Beverly” and that Dr. Crusher will play a key role in the series. Sir Patrick Stewart said that there will be some tension between the characters, (which is a drift from TNG, where Roddenberry insisted that in the future, professional crew members always got along).
To support that, Matalas stated that making a show for modern audiences means that you have to include conflict among the crew, which will be seen among some of the characters. Trying to add more homage to the season, he considered adding VOY Naomi Wildman’s character, all grown up into the show and she would interact with Seven of Nine, and if they’d had 13 episodes to work with, it might have happened, but in the end, it wasn’t able to be done.
We will see PIC’s Laris (Orla Brady) appear in the new season, not a huge part, but she will make an appearance. He also promises growth for Rafi and Seven as the series ends.
And, one final teaser, he speaks about the vessel that they will all be on. It will take place on a new Starfleet ship that, though utilizing the U.S.S. Stargazer sets, it will not be the Stargazer. As fans we’re admittedly torn, we want to know everything that there is to know about the new season, yet we want to be surprised when the time comes. So choose your crumbs wisely, if you want to know even more about what’s in store, you can set
