Terry Matalas and the Cast of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Lay the Groundwork For More Next Generation Adventures

DECEMBER 5, 2022 - More updates for season three of Star Trek: Picard keep coming in, with new reveals and deeper clues as to what to expect. With the announcement that the entire TNG cast would be returning to us this coming year of PIC, we the fans obviously want to know as much about it as we can. We mentioned here that it starts with Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden); We spoke about character development for the crew here; Here spoke about the new USS Titan that will be the main ship; What the makeup effects will be like for the new season; Some of the changes our beloved crew members have made in their journey in life since we last saw them; and some unexpected returning villains.
There are changes from when we last saw the beloved crew. They are older, wiser, and ready to speak their mind more openly than they previously had. The stars are continuing to share their profound happiness in the new season of PIC. McFadden, relates that there is a real sense of human drama in PIC season three that is different than what has come before.
For her, the contrast between Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 and Picard now is simply the amount of care and time spent on the entire cast. “What a world of difference,” McFadden says. “I felt all the characters were so honored in this season of Picard.”
And showrunner Matalas’ love of Star Trek lore isn’t just about TNG. The big news is, of course, the return of the cast from that beloved series, but PIC season three is also a sequel to DS9, where huge events from that story also play a big part in the plot. “I think that it’s important that DS9 fans feel seen,” Matalas says. “It’s a continuation of VOY too, of course, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before.”
The hints have certainly been going around about a Next, Next Generation, so, is there a bit more solidity to these rumors? Although this has been billed as a “final” TNG adventure, Matalas is not ready to call it the end. “Please send your letters to Paramount+ and Secret Hideout,” he urges the fans.
Jonathan Frakes also begs for more adventures set in this era of Star Trek. “As you’ll see by the end of the season, it’s ripe for a continuation of some version of what we’ve established in the show. Not more PIC, but certainly, TNG is alive and well.”
As we listen to the cast, PIC season three doesn’t have to be a one-off reunion. It could be the beginning of a comeback. “We are obviously so ready to do it and in a really good place to do it,” McFadden enthuses. “We’re just getting started.”
