Potential Writers Guild Strike Could Affect Star Trek
MAY 1, 2023 – As of this writing, we are holding our breath in anticipation of the impending strike by the Writers Guild of America, which could eventually affect Star Trek production.
The Hollywood Reporter has an overview of the issues resulting from the looming expiration of the current contract between the WGA and the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which happens at midnight, unless the parties extend the agreement or negotiate a new one. The WGA consists of the Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America, West. They represent writers in various media, including film and television. The AMPTP consists of television and film production companies, including Paramount Global, producers of the Star Trek franchise.
Whether or not a particular show is affected by a work stoppage might depend on how long the strike lasts. Some television formats would likely see an interruption in production sooner, such as late-night shows, which involve ongoing and timely production schedules, while episodic shows would be hit later as writers get started on upcoming seasons. We know from recent announcements, though, that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Academy, and Section 31 are in varying stages of development, so they could possibly be impacted by a strike.
Issues include writers’ compensation and the use of mini-rooms, where groups of writers work in advance of the production of a television series. According to the CBC, writers are also concerned about the use of artificial intelligence in scriptwriting in ways that would undermine their work.
We will keep you posted if and when any work stoppage involves your favorite franchise.
