Star Trek's original USS Enteprise model goes back on display at the Smithsonian
AUGUST 15, 2022 - Space…2let this not be her final frontier. This is the storage of the starship Enterprise. It’s three-year mission, to wait in a warehouse while the exhibit was being remodeled…
In 2016 the original 11-foot filming model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, from our favorite Sci-Fi franchise was restored and on permanent display. Then, in 2019 it was again taken off of display as part of a larger renovation of the Smithsonian Museum. It was expected to be off display for a few years.
Now, the renovation of the space it sits in has been finished (enough) to put the model back on display. According to The Smithsonian, the ship is still in good condition from being in storage during the museum’s renovation and has not required any additional work.
According to a spokesperson for the museum, the U.S.S Enterprise filming model display will be available to the public starting on October 14 as part of the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall, in the south lobby and will be displayed very similarly as it was before, including in the same case.
In 1974 Paramount donated the large filming model to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum where it has been on display in various locations over the decades and now will return to its latest display, following its significant conservation project in 2016.
Having had the opportunity to see the model on display myself, I can personally attest to the awe that overcomes you when you stand in front of her and see her on display. You choke up a little and have no words to describe the experience.
