OCTOBER 25, 2022 - Star Trek: Prodigy is set to warp back on to Paramount+ in just a few days, with the second half of season 1 on October 27. According to the logline, “At the edge of Federation space, the crew applies for asylum at a comm relay outpost, only for their starship to reveal its shocking true purpose.”

The photos from the episode don’t reveal a lot about the plot, mainly showing the young crew at the comm relay, but one photo in particular may be of interest. We finally get our first look at an animated Admirsal Jellico, played by Ronny Cox. The return of the Admiral, first seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Chain of Command, Parts I and II,” was announced during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con.

The panel also included Jameela Jamil, who plays Ensign Asencia, a Trill officer who serves on the bridge on Admiral Janeway’s USS Dauntless. The character will feature prominently in the second half of the season, beginning with this week’s episode, “Asylum.”

The actress revealed her deep love for Star Trek and gave us a brief glimpse as to what we can expect from her character, but possibly of major interest is the fact that she’s a life long fan of the franchise.

Some quotes from the panel interview:

I think the fact that we tell important stories and there was so much diversity all the way back to the Captain Kirk days. That to me is something that is very exciting and a legacy that no one can match. And also they’ve been so ahead of the game with the stories that they’ve told. The stories from 40 years ago and the stories that we still need now more than ever, like people who come from different places, different backgrounds, who speak different languages, who don’t even understand each other, who politically do not agree with each other. Even the journey of like the Ferengi – we need to see more stories of people who come from different places, finding a way to work together toward. Maybe it is because they have common enemies like The Borg or whatever but I think that they just created a very fantastical way to tell actually very grand stories.

We see indeed that she is a big fan of the franchise and such enthusiasm can only drive her performance as Ensign Asencia to the next Next Generation of fans. Stay tuned for DSTN’s review of the half of Star Trek: Prodigy, season 1 part 2, coming on Thursday.
