John Cho Injured on Set of Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop
Star Trek Beyond’s Sulu, John Cho, is starring in the live-action Netflix adaptation of the hit anime series Cowboy Bebop. But a recent on-set injury has reportedly set the production back as much as nine months.
Deadline reported that the hiatus is due to a knee injury that Cho sustained while filming in New Zealand. According to the piece, “Sources describe the injury as a freak accident that happened on the last take of a routine and well-rehearsed scene almost two weeks ago. It requires surgery, for which Cho has been flown back to Los Angeles, and an extensive rehabilitation.”
A Netflix spokesperson said, in a statement to Deadline, “Our thoughts are with John, and he has our complete support as he recuperates from this injury.” Cho, for his part, posted a message to fans on Instagram quoting Bruce Lee. “Water can flow or it can crash,” he said. “Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Gonna be back and flowing in no time!”
Cowboy Bebop was a critically acclaimed anime that ran for just 26 episodes in 1998 and 1999, and follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters in space, aboard their ship Bebop. Cho plays the lead in the new series, Spike Spiegel. Deadline says that a new filming schedule will be set once the extent of Cho’s injury is better understood.
