Kenneth Mitchell appears on Star Trek: The Cruise; first outing since revealing ALS diagnosis
Star Trek: Discovery’s Kenneth Mitchell has made his first public appearance since revealing his ALS diagnosis.
On Friday, February 28th, People magazine published a story in which Mitchell revealed that in August of 2018, he was diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He has used a wheelchair full-time since November of last year. Mitchell’s health problems didn’t get in the way of his joining fans on Star Trek: The Cruise last week, though.
On Wednesday night, Mitchell hosted the Villains dance party...and indulged in a little bit of crowd surfing! His friend and fellow Discovery Klingon Mary Chieffo posted a video of the event on Twitter, with the caption, “My ears are still ringing. My heart is so full. Last night was one I’ll never, ever forget. @MrKenMitchell is the bravest, boldest, and most beautiful man I know. THIS is the Star Trek I believe in.”

Later, Mitchell also posted a picture from the night, saying, “What a night. WHAT A NIGHT! Hard to describe the pure EUPHORIA. Thank you all for sharing in this moment. So much love & light out there. We lived a dream. We stopped time. We made TIME.”

On Sunday morning, as the cruise was finishing, Mitchell tweeted a picture of himself on the deck of the ship, in his wheelchair. His back was turned toward the camera, and he faced out toward the ocean, and the sun close to the horizon. Along with the picture, he tweeted, “Thank you Mother Nature, thank you @startrekcruise, thank you #StarTrek family. I am inspired. I am enlightened. Forever more. #Time”
