McMahan: Star Trek: Lower Decks still on schedule despite crew working from home

Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan has reassured fans that his new animated Star Trek series, planned for sometime this year, has so far not been delayed by concerns over COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Last Sunday, McMahan retweeted a fan, who asked: “Level 1 question if I may: thoughts on Covid delaying a random sci-fi animated program previously announced as a 2020 release?”

McMahan answered: “So far both Lower Decks and Solar [Opposites] crews have been able to work remotely- delivery hasn’t yet been impacted. The situation changes every day, so that may not be true tomorrow, but I’m proud that we’re still working full time and that the shows are looking great. Our number one priority is the safety of the crew. Animation is uniquely suited to this moment- everyone moved their work stations home, we’re writing and collaborating on Zoom- hopefully everyone will be able to see both shows as expected! So stay safe, STAY INSIDE, and hang in there until I can get you all this sci-fi comedy!!!!!!”

In addition to Lower Decks, McMahan is also the creator of Solar Opposites, a Hulu original animated series, due out May 8th. We’ve had no official word on the release date for Lower Decks, although executive producer Heather Kadin has said it could be ready as early as May as well, subject to scheduling by CBS All Access.
