CBS All Access says Star Trek: Lower Decks is “coming in 2020”
No spoilers here, but it will come as no surprise to many that the new Star Trek series, Picard, is not exactly high on levity. The young Romulan Space Elf Elnor brings a kind of comedic naivete to the show, as do Captain Cris Rios’s seemingly endless string of emergency-something-or-other holograms, but on the whole, the story in Picard is a dark representation of the state of the future.
It won’t always be that way, though, as CBS All Access has recently reminded us that Lower Decks, the new Star Trek comedy series from Rick & Morty writer Mike McMahan, is on its way later this year. In a tweet on Friday, Star Trek on CBS All Access tweeted a picture of the four main characters of Lower Decks, with the caption, “They go where the REAL action is... the Lower Decks. #StarTrekLowerDecks, coming in 2020.” The image is one that we’ve seen before, but admittedly, it has been a while.

Sadly, the tweet gave no indication of when exactly we can hope to see the new series. The last we heard, Executive Producer Heather Kadin said that both Lower Decks and Star Trek: Discovery season 3 would be ready as early as May, but that it’s up to CBS All Access to schedule the programming. It’s important to note here that we haven’t heard when Discovery season 3 is due to start either, so it’s anyone’s guess, at least for now.
In the meantime, while we wait to hear more about what the rest of the year will look like for Star Trek, you can bone up on Discovery seasons 1 and 2, and of course, Star Trek: Picard, now streaming on CBS All Access.
