Star Trek actors Chase Masterson and Daniel Hugh Kelly examine grief in indie film Skipping Stones
AUGUST 4, 2021 - Skipping Stones, an indie film featuring actors from the Star Trek universe, was originally slated to be released in September of 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way. Now, almost a year later, the project is making its way to theaters and Video On Demand after being picked up by independent distributor Nova Vento Entertainment.
Chase Masterson, who created the role of dabo-girl-turned-first-lady-of-the-Ferengi-Alliance Leeta on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, plays a grieving mother in the film, which examines the ongoing impact a young man’s death has on his friends and family nearly a decade after a tragic accident. Daniel Hugh Kelly, who played Ba’ku leader Sojef in 1998’s Star Trek: Insurrection, plays her husband, going through his own journey of loss.
Another sci-fi veteran actor, the iconic Michael Ironside, appears in the film as well. He joins Robocop 2’s Patricia Charbonneau to play the parents of protagonist David, who blames himself for his friend’s death.
As described in an official press release, “Skipping Stones explores the layers and depths of grief that come with healing after a life-altering catastrophe.” Eden Bryant of Nova Vento remarks, “This is a truly beautiful, gripping film that will stay with you long after the credits have run. The subjects are heavy-hitting and powerful, but also a much-needed conversation for a generation struggling with their place in this world.”
