Star Trek films jump from Paramount+ to AMC+
AUGUST 5, 2021 - Many of us have come to equate the Paramount+ streaming service with Star Trek content here in the United States, and for a time that was becoming even more a reality. But as of this month, that expectation is a little farther from being fulfilled.
Paramount+ in the US is already the home of every episode of every Star Trek television series. According to TrekMovie, earlier this summer the service also added (along with hundreds of other movies) all but one of the Original Series, Next Gen and J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek feature films. Star Trek (2009) was the only one missing.
As of now, however, all but two of those 12 films have left the Paramount+ catalog, with only Star Trek: Beyond and Star Trek: Into Darkness remaining. The six Original Series movies and all but one, Star Trek: Generations, of the Next Gen films have since migrated to the AMC+ streaming service. Generations appears to be currently unavailable to stream.
AMC+ was launched last year and makes content available from among AMC’s brands, including the AMC Network, home of The Walking Dead; BBC America; IFT; SundanceTV; and Shudder.
There is no word as to when or if these Star Trek films will return to Paramount+, but that’s hardly surprising: being “a leading producer and licensor of premium content to third-party platforms globally” was one of ViacomCBS’s strategic pillars when the merger was announced in 2019. For context, licensing contributed $1.8m (25%) to ViacomCBS’s 2021 first-quarter revenue.
