Star Trek Online is planning a big year. They’ve already celebrated their 10th anniversary by launching a new update featuring Jeri Ryan and Sonequa Martin-Green, they’ve put on a special Winter event to help us through this April’s doldrums, and now, a huge announcement for Klingon fans.

Cryptic Studios, the developers behind the popular free-to-play MMORPG, have announced that this year will be the “Year of Klingon”. In an announcement on their blog, they said, “Over the rest of 2020, and part of 2021, we’re going to be putting on a major, multipart, 2411-focused Klingon storyline. We can’t release the details on what that is just yet [...] but as part of this long-planned, face-of-the-game changing story, we’re taking a little time to focus on our most honorable allies.”

Cryptic acknowledged that some of the legacy Klingon content in the game is outdated and in need of a facelift. So in addition to promising new Klingon content, they’ve also committed to updating some of the existing content, too. They said, “Over the next twelve months (maybe more), you’ll see new Klingon character models for some of our classic characters like J’Mpok, updated skins for the classic Klingon ships like the Bird of Prey, new environments and cutscenes to refresh this old but beloved content.”

Cryptic’s timeline for the intended improvements is intentionally vague. In a separate post describing upcoming Star Trek Online projects, they said that ongoing uncertainty about business operations amid the COVID-19 crisis means that “things may shift”. However, they do have a plan for the gradual rollout of the Klingon content; they say, “Like how our Age of Discovery expansion came out over the course of most of a year, this refresh will be released in pieces.” To that end, they’ve scheduled a series of blog posts and livestream content to keep you updated on the latest.
