With Cryptic Studios on lockdown, Star Trek Online is still online
Cryptic Studios, the company behind Star Trek Online, has sought to reassure players of its plans to support the game while its employees work remotely. Cryptic, which is located in Los Gatos, California, is in one of the counties covered by the Bay Area’s “shelter in place” order, which took effect last Tuesday and is aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus in the area.
Last Monday, Cryptic made the following statement on their website:
“Dear Players,
“Many of you have asked about the impact of current events on Cryptic Studios, so we wanted to provide an update:
“We are actively taking preventive measures to protect the health of our employees and their families. Plans are in place to ensure Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, and Champions Online remain operational and Magic: Legends continues active development. Meanwhile, our teams will continue to work remotely in accordance with recent ‘shelter in home’ orders enacted by our local county.
“We appreciate your understanding while we adapt to both ensure a positive play experience for all of you and keep our studio family safe.”
Based on Star Trek Online’s website, all the normal in-game promotions for both the PC and console versions of the game appear to be going ahead as planned.
If you’d like to hear more about what’s currently happening in Star Trek Online, have a listen to this week’s Priority One: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast. In addition to a roundup of the week’s news and a dive into episode 8 of Star Trek: Picard, “Broken Pieces”, they’ve also got a great interview with Star Trek Online’s lead designer, Al “Captain Geko” Rivera. It’s definitely one to “Trek Out”. (That’s a Priority One joke, by the way!)
