Star Trek: Picard is certified “fresh”
After being available for less than a day, Star Trek: Picard has been certified “fresh” by film and TV review site Rotten Tomatoes.
As of writing this piece, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have rated the new Sir Patrick Stewart-helmed series 92% on the Tomatometer. To be certified “fresh”, a TV series must score above 75% with at least 20 reviews, five of which must be from what they call “top critics”. Currently, 36 of 39 critics rate Picard favorably, with comments like “Despite the cameos and Easter eggs, Picard never feels like nostalgia for its own sake” from Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone, and “Thankfully for ‘Trek’ devotees, casual fans and curious subscribers alike, ‘Picard’ is a delight” from Kelly Lawler of USA Today.
Viewers were not quite as kind as the critics, and rated the show just 79% from 229 reviews. The negative comments ranged from the superficial, like “CW level quality of acting, sets and effects”, to the fundamental, like “This isn't Trek.“ On the whole though, the first episode of the new series has been broadly well-received, and it’s reflected in the Rotten Tomatoes scores. Later today, we’ll be able to start gauging reaction from outside North America, as well.
