Star Trek: Picard nominated for Best Special Make-Up Effects by Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild
FEBRUARY 23, 2021 - Star Trek: Picard has picked up another notable award nomination for its makeup effects. The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (also known as IATSE Local 706) announced the nominations last week for their 8th Annual MUAHS Guild Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in make-up and hair styling in motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater.
The Picard make-up team, of James Mackinnon, Richard Redlefsen, Alexei Dmitriew and Vincent Van Dyke, was nominated for Best Special Make-Up Effects in a Television Series, Television Limited or Miniseries, or Television New Media Series. They face stiff competition in the category from the miniseries Hollywood (from Netflix), Disney+’s The Mandalorian, and Lovecraft Country and Westworld, both from HBO. However, it’s worth noting that the Picard team won the same category at the 2020 Emmy Awards last September, beating out Hollywood, The Mandalorian and Westworld in that event.
The nominations also follow on from last year’s 7th Annual Awards, held in January 2020, in which Sir Patrick Stewart won the special Distinguished Artisan Award. When it was announced in December of 2019, Julie Socash, President of the Guild, said of the award, “Sir Patrick Stewart is a legendary actor whose myriad of characters live in our hearts forever. He is so deserving of this special recognition spotlighting his award-winning stage and screen performances, and we celebrate his great collaboration with our talented artists.”
Winners of the 2021 8th Annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards will be announced at their virtual gala on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021. Registration is free but required, and you can find out more on the Local 706 website at local706.org.
