Wilson Cruz and Michelle Paradise Discuss the "Tonal Shift" That's Coming In Season 5
OCTOBER 18, 2022 - Following the trailer dropping for season five of Star Trek: Discovery at New York Comic Con, Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise had some things to say about the upcoming season. They sat down with TV Insider to reflect on the new season and how things have developed over previous seasons.
Cruz said it was the first time he had seen the NYCC trailer and was “blown away by it.” (If you haven’t seen it yet, you can revisit our coverage of the Discovery panel.) Paradise noted that after the heaviness of some of the previous seasons, she and fellow showrunner Alex Kurtzman talked about a “tonal shift” toward a lighter, action-adventure vibe. Cruz, however, pointed out that the stakes are still high, they’re just different.
Reflecting on the series over all as well as his own character, Cruz also noted that it’s “no accident that it’s called Discovery. These people are not just discovering new planets and galaxies and species, but they’re also discovering who they are….”
Paradise encouraged fans to look forward to a “fun quest,” which will get underway sometime in 2023.
In the meantime, you can watch the entire interview at TV Insider and catch up on seasons one to four of Star Trek: Discovery, streaming now on Paramount+.
