A Town in Indiana Wants to Build a Statue of Star Trek: Voyager’s Captain Janeway
A town in Indiana is raising funds for a statue of their local hero...who won’t be born for another 300 years.
Bloomington, Indiana is the town in which the future captain of the U.S.S. Voyager - Kathryn Janeway - was born. And now a group of Star Trek fans are hoping to commemorate the character’s “future” contributions, as well as to acknowledge her role model status for young women of today.
According to a piece from Comicbook.com, Peter Kaczmarczyk, from the Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective, said, “Captain Janeway consistently demonstrated integrity and humanity in the face of many challenges. She [...] deserves to be recognized in Bloomington, the place of her future birth.”
The Comicbook.com piece goes on to say, “The proposed design includes a bronze bust of Janeway atop a limestone base in the shape of a Starfleet insignia with stainless steel plating. The monument will also include information about Janeway’s character and backstory, including her connection to Bloomington.”
To raise funds for the design and installation of the statue, the Janeway Collective is raising money on Patronicity. The project is supported by Bloomington’s Artisan Alley and the City of Bloomington, with the permission of CBS Studios. And if the campaign reaches its goal of $12,500 by the end of December, then the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority will contribute another $12,500, bringing the overall total to $25,000.
If you’d like to contribute to the campaign, and be a part of future history, just go to patronicity.com and search for “Janeway”.
