Garrett Wang commisserates with Anthony Montgomery about being "Harry Kimmed"
AUGUST 30, 2022 - On Thursday, August 25, 2022, at the 56-Year Mission Las Vegas convention, fans of Star Trek: Enterprise were delighted to attend a lively discussion panel featuring John Billingsley (Dr. Phlox), Connor Trinneer (Charles “Trip” Tucker), Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed), and Anthony Montgomery (Travis Mayweather).
This same group had assembled for a panel at the Star Trek Mission: Chicago convention earlier in the year, and, while they pretty much covered the same topics as that panel, there was one difference this time, because the panel was moderated by actor Garrett Wang, Star Trek: Voyager’s Harry Kim. During the panel, Montgomery talked to Wang about following in his character’s footsteps, telling him that he, (Montgomery) “got Harry Kimmed”.
“If I have to be honest, I didn’t like the fact that I didn’t have much to do. Because I’m actually pretty talented if I do say so myself. Because I worked hard at it. That’s not me looking for kudos. But I work hard at my craft. And I just felt like I was underutilized. There were many scenes where I just literally go in for a day and ‘Oh, this is all I have to say? “Captain, there’s an ion storm, should we go around it?” Okay, cut. I’ll see you guys next week.’ So, it was like that, and having a bunch of those (scenes) is probably what I didn’t like. I just wish I could have been able to contribute more.”
Wang, of course, understood his particular dilemma, being an ensign for 7 years, with many episodes just sticking him on the bridge, he too lamented; “Anthony, I just want to say, I feel your pain. ‘Shields at thirty percent, captain.’ ‘You’re wrapped Harry, thank you.’”
Montgomery went on to say that when he first started the show, he was told “We hope that they don’t ‘Harry Kim’ you.” At the time, he didn’t realize that the expression was a verb. He further stated that his character and ‘Trip’ were supposed to have been close friends in the show, but that never materialized in the series.
When asked if there was another character that he would have liked to play, Montgomery came back with “Commander Mayweather”, he loved his character and would have liked to play it with more to do.
Many fans of the series and his character in particular have felt the same way. If you’d like to read more about the panel discussion and other comments, “It’s (not) a long road… getting from there to here”… head over to TREKMOVIE.com to read the entire article.
