Star Trek Online updates in-game memorials with new design after the death of Rene Auberjonois
The makers of Star Trek Online have revamped their in-game memorial to Star Trek stars we have lost.
After Leonard Nimoy’s death in 2015, game developers Cryptic Studios erected memorials in-game where players could gather and pay their respects. At the time, that consisted of two memorials to Nimoy himself, one on Vulcan and one on New Romulus, and three memorial plaques to others, on Earth Spacedock, Qo’noS, and (again) New Romulus. Those memorials displayed the names of Majel Barrett, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy and Gene Roddenberry. Players could see a longer list of those who have passed, by interacting with the memorial plaques.
The two Nimoy memorials are still in place, but now, the memorial plaques have been given an updated design. Additionally, a whole new memorial plaque has been installed in Deep Space Nine, overlooking the wormhole, in honor of Aron Eisenberg and Rene Auberjonois, both of whom passed away recently. The new memorials are upright, taller, and feature a backlit display of names that scroll by gently as you watch.
Star Trek Online Lead Designer Al “Captain Geko” Rivera credits the new memorial to Nick Duguid, Senior Environment Artist at Cryptic Studios. He said in a tweet: “As soon as @Tumerboy heard the news about @reneauberjonois on [December 8th], he dropped what he was doing and started to build this. When I came in on Sunday I was stunned. Thank you Nick.”
